Why the VIN and not the year and model
Manufacturers change suppliers mid-year, run two versions of the same component on one model, and build the same nameplate in different plants with different hardware. A catalog lookup by year, make and model cannot see any of that. The VIN can, because it encodes the plant, the engine family and the production sequence.
The plant field matters more than people expect. Assembly location is frequently exactly what separates two versions of the same part.

Common questions
Where do I find my VIN?
Three reliable places: the driver-side door jamb sticker, the base of the windshield on the driver's side viewed from outside, and your insurance card or registration. All three should match.
Is this decoder really free?
Yes. It queries vPIC, a public database operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There is no account, no payment and no rate limit for ordinary use. We have put an interface on a public service — we do not charge for it and we do not store your VIN.
Why does my decode show some fields as blank?
Manufacturers are only required to encode certain fields in the VIN itself. Optional equipment, exact trim and color frequently are not encoded. A partial decode is normal — use what came back and confirm the rest against the part you are replacing.
Does the VIN tell me which exact part to buy?
It tells you what vehicle you have, which is the input every parts catalog needs. It does not identify individual part numbers. The most reliable final check is still the casting or part number on the component you are removing.
