What actually fails
Spark plugs wear by electrode erosion — the gap slowly opens until the coil can no longer bridge it reliably under load. Coils fail from heat cycling and from being asked to fire across a worn plug gap for too long, which is why a neglected plug interval frequently takes a coil with it.
A misfire under acceleration, a flashing check engine light, or a rough idle that smooths out at speed all point here. A flashing light specifically means raw fuel is reaching the catalytic converter; keep driving on it and you turn a cheap plug job into an expensive converter.
Getting ignition fitment right
Plugs are not interchangeable by displacement. Two engines of the same size from the same manufacturer routinely take entirely different plugs.
- Start from the engine code, not the liters. A 5.4 liter with two valves per cylinder and a 5.4 with three are different engines with different plugs, coils and failure patterns.
- Reach is not negotiable. Reach is how far the threaded portion extends into the chamber. Too long and the plug can contact the piston; too short and the spark fires in a pocket where it cannot light the charge properly.
- Heat range is matched to the engine. It describes how quickly the plug sheds heat. Going colder because it sounds like an upgrade causes fouling on a stock engine.
- Gap. Most plugs ship pre-gapped to a common spec that may not be yours. Check it against the under-hood emissions label. Never gap a fine-wire iridium or platinum plug by levering against the center electrode — you will snap it.
Where to spend and where not to
Plugs. Buy the material the engine was designed around. If it left the factory with iridium, fit iridium; the long service interval assumes it, and copper plugs in a modern coil-on-plug engine will need replacing again in a fraction of the time. Copper remains correct and cheap on older engines that specify it.
Coils. This is a strong case for the OE supplier tier. The company that made the original coil for the automaker frequently sells the identical unit in its own box for meaningfully less than the dealer price. Bargain no-name coils are one of the most common repeat-failure items in the entire aftermarket.
Wires, on engines old enough to have them, are worth buying as a named-brand set rather than individually.
Counterfeits are a real problem here
Major plug brands are among the most counterfeited automotive products sold online. Fakes look convincing in listing photos and fail quickly, sometimes destructively.
The wider point: on a part this cheap, the saving available from a questionable seller is a few dollars. The downside is a misfire that damages a converter. The maths is not close.
Common questions
How often should spark plugs be replaced?
Follow the interval in your owner's manual rather than a generic figure — it varies enormously by plug material and engine design. Copper plugs may want replacing every 30,000 miles or so, while long-life iridium plugs in modern engines are often specified at 100,000. The manual and the under-hood emissions label are the authority for your specific vehicle.
Do I need to replace all the coils when one fails?
Not automatically. If one coil fails early on an otherwise healthy engine, replace that one. If the car is high mileage, the plugs are overdue, and coils are failing in sequence, doing the set at once saves repeated labor on an engine where access is poor.
Can I use a different brand of plug than the original?
Yes, provided the replacement matches the original's reach, thread size, heat range and electrode design. Major manufacturers publish cross-reference tables mapping their part numbers to the original equipment number. When the cross-reference and the catalog lookup agree, you are almost certainly right.
