What actually wears out
Pads are consumable and are supposed to wear. Rotors wear too, and they also develop disc thickness variation — uneven pad material deposited on the surface, which is what almost everyone means when they say a rotor is "warped." Calipers fail differently: slide pins seize, piston seals swell, and a sticking caliper cooks one pad down to backing plate while the other three look new.
Uneven wear side to side is diagnostic. If one corner is gone and the rest are fine, replacing pads without fixing the caliper or its slide hardware just destroys the new set.
Getting brake fitment right
This is the category where year, make and model fails most often. The same model year frequently ships with two or three different brake packages depending on trim, engine, tow rating or a factory performance option. The catalog cannot see which one you have. You can.
- Measure the rotor diameter. Take the wheel off and measure edge to edge across the friction surface. This single number eliminates almost every wrong-part scenario.
- Vented or solid. Look at the rotor edge. Vented rotors have visible fins between two faces; solid rotors are one slab. Rears are frequently solid where fronts are vented.
- Count the caliper pistons. Single-piston sliding calipers take different pads than dual-piston or fixed calipers.
- Check for a wear sensor. Some pads carry an electrical wear lead. If yours has one and the new set does not, you get a dashboard light you cannot clear.
- Parking brake style. Many rear rotors have a small drum in the hat for a drum-style parking brake. Some do not. They are not interchangeable.
Where to spend and where not to
Brakes are the clearest case on this site for not buying the cheapest option. They are safety critical, they are the system that stops the car, and the price gap between a no-name rotor and a reputable one is small in absolute terms.
Pads. Compound matters more than brand. Ceramic runs quiet and produces light-colored dust, and suits ordinary commuting. Semi-metallic bites harder and tolerates heat better, at the cost of noise and rotor wear — sensible if you tow or drive hills. Low-end organic pads are the one grade genuinely worth avoiding on a modern car.
Rotors. Plain smooth rotors are correct for nearly every road car. Drilled and slotted rotors are mostly cosmetic at street speeds and drilled rotors can crack around the holes under heat. Do not pay extra for them because they look fast.
Calipers. Remanufactured calipers are a legitimate value here and usually carry a core charge you get back. Check that the reman includes new slide pins and boots, because seized pins are what killed the original.
The trap that costs people a weekend
Rotors have a minimum thickness figure cast or stamped into the hat. If your old rotor measures at or below it, it is scrap, and machining it is not an option. Check this before ordering pads only. Buying pads, getting the car apart, then discovering the rotors are past their limit is the single most common way a two-hour brake job turns into a weekend.
The other one: brake parts are heavy. A rotor that is a few dollars cheaper online can lose the entire saving to shipping, and returning a wrong 20 lb rotor pair frequently costs more than the discount that attracted you. Factor the return cost into the price before you order.
Common questions
Do I have to replace rotors every time I replace pads?
No, but you do have to measure them. If the rotor is above its stamped minimum thickness, has an even surface with no scoring or lip, and the car brakes without pulsing, new pads on existing rotors are fine. If it is at or under minimum, it must be replaced — machining it below spec is not safe.
Are expensive brake pads actually better?
Up to a point. Moving from bargain organic pads to a reputable ceramic or semi-metallic set is a real improvement in stopping, noise and dust. Beyond mid-tier, you are usually paying for track capability that never engages at road temperatures.
Why do my new brakes squeal?
Usually missing or reused hardware. New pads need the shims, clips and abutment hardware that come in the box, plus a thin film of brake grease on the slide points and the back of the pad — never on the friction surface. Skipping the hardware is the most common cause of a squeal after a fresh job.
